January honor · Fire Safety chip, all levels take part

Fire Safety

Stop, drop and roll, crawl low under smoke, and a family meeting place. This month the kids practise what to do if there is ever a fire, and a visit from the fire station turns it into the night they talk about all year.

Stop, drop, roll, and a plan for home.

Why kids love it

  • Fire station visit. The truck, the gear, the firefighter putting on a mask so kids are not scared of it.
  • They practise it. Stop-drop-roll on the mats, crawling under a "smoke" sheet, feeling a door for heat.
  • A plan for home. Each child draws their home and two ways out of every room.
  • Smoke alarm check. Kids learn the sound and the test button.

What we will do

  1. What fire needs. Heat, fuel, air: why we never play with matches or lighters.
  2. Stop, drop and roll, and get low. Practised until every child does it without thinking.
  3. Two ways out. Draw your home escape plan and pick a family meeting spot outside.
  4. Smoke alarms and 911. Test an alarm; practise the 911 call with a leader playing the dispatcher.
  5. Fire station night. Visit, ask questions, and tell the firefighter your escape plan to earn the chip.

Parents: please walk the escape plan at home once; the kids will ask you to.

Stars, chips and awards are the Adventurer badges: Little Lambs earn stars, Eager Beavers earn chips, Busy Bees and up earn awards. Official requirements are in the leader's guide; younger levels join every activity and count it toward their own level.
