February honor · Seed award

Seeds

A bean in a wet paper towel, a jar on the windowsill, and a week of checking every morning. This month the kids learn what a seed is, what it needs, and watch the miracle happen on the table in front of them.

Plant it, water it, watch it wake up.

Why kids love it

  • Something alive, from nothing. A dry bean splits and a root pushes out. Kids never forget seeing it.
  • A seed to take home. Each child sprouts and pots a seedling to keep.
  • Seed sorting. Big, tiny, winged, spiky: a tray of seeds to sort and guess what they become.
  • A head start on March. The seedlings go into the club garden next month.

What we will do

  1. What is a seed? Open a soaked bean and find the baby plant inside.
  2. What seeds need. Water, warmth, light, soil: set up jars with one thing missing and watch what happens.
  3. Plant and label. Each child plants three kinds and labels them with the date.
  4. Keep a seed diary. Draw what you see each club night for three weeks.
  5. Seed match. Match seeds to the plants and foods they become, and show your diary to earn the award.

Seedlings travel home on the last February night; keep them on a sunny windowsill.

Stars, chips and awards are the Adventurer badges: Little Lambs earn stars, Eager Beavers earn chips, Busy Bees and up earn awards. Official requirements are in the leader's guide; younger levels join every activity and count it toward their own level.
